Now, what is the main difference? If the stone has no inclusions at all it’s probably a synthetic one just the same as the red version because natural gems of this type without inclusions are extremely rare.
Since these two gemstones come from the same family which is corundum they are always found in the area, they are also on the market as synthetic stones.
The demand for the stone is maybe a bit less compared to ruby with the right parameter but sapphire is quite similar. Together with some diamonds to add "fire" or sparkling it could give a perfect engagement ring in blue or pink colors. Sri Lanka is also the source of a number of fine star sapphires some weighing hundreds of carats and is the greatest producer of star sapphire/corundum of all colors While Burmese stones are of a more intense 'royal blue' the Sri Lankan sapphire is a brighter 'cornflower blue' as there is less color in the stone. Blue sapphires from Sri Lanka have a unique beauty being brighter and more lively than any others.
Sri Lanka is perhaps the most prolific producer of giant sapphires and has yielded the vast majority of all large sapphires that the world has seen. Here we talk about untreated sapphire and other gems only. However the discovery of appropriate heat treatments has changed the situation completely so that today deep blues of all sizes are available. Until the late 1970's Sri Lankan sapphires generally reached the richer blues only in stones of 10 carats or more. This is in contrast to Kashmir Sri Lanka and Myanmar which have produced a number of fine sapphire giants. Pailin precious stones however tend to be a little on the dark side and stones larger than 5 carats cut are rare and generally too dark in color. The Pailin mine in Cambodia has produced a number of fine stones over the past 100 years although today production is limited because of political problems. Fine Myanmar sapphires tend to be ever so slightly more violet in hue position than those from Sri Lanka. Star sapphires are very rare but many fine examples exist from Myanmar some of the large sizes.
